Creating and launching my own Art Selection

It’s one of those things

‘There’s so much out there.. why should I bother’

‘My “Real” creative friends will think it’s stupid’

‘It’s a lot of work, I don’t think I have the time’

and my personal favourite:

‘I really don’t think my work is good enough’

The most frequently spoken words of the Creative. We are a strange bunch: We have the ability to easily create or build things that other people wouldn’t even know where to start with. We create things that speak to people’s inner souls and their subconscious. The way we express ourselves is itself something pure, real and touching. Sometimes they have no idea our work is around them, seeping into their minds: sparking memories, compulsions, urges and feelings. I know some amazingly creative people past and present in my life that create phenomenal work. They are painters, Illustrators, Marketeers, Photographers, Dancers, Writers and Musicians. (most of them that are coming into my mind right now are female as well. Which makes it even better)

How I work

My prints are mostly hand-drawn or painted. They start on pen and paper. (sharpie and digital pens are my weapons of choice) Then I like to scan it in, sometimes I need to draw it (‘trace’ it if you like) for a second or third time digitally. But I’ve discovered that the movement of the hand and actual pen can’t be replicated. Some people are all about electronic pads, and can just go for it.. I admire those people. I’m a bit more behind.

What inspire’s me?

  • I LOVE mid-century prints and fabrics.. The shapes and feel of the designs are amazing to me. There is a lot of mid-century stylings at my house. The mid-century shapes and colour combinations are fantastic. I love using modern palettes in these to bring them up to date.

  • Chinese and Oriental tatt, Kitsch, Bold typefaces, whatever. Paula Schur, Hanna barbera Illustrations (Yogi Bear, Top Cat, The jetsons of course), the odd bit of profanity, irony and passion in wording is always amusing to me. Bold prints (cole and son are my fave’s) engravings and litho work.

  • Art Deco. Again: this is present in my living spaces.

  • French renaissance. Yup. That’s random, isn’t it? It’s normally used as accents. Gold cupids, Scrolls, curls and over the top grandeur

  • Yellow. You may have noticed, that this colour is strong in my ecosystem.

  • Design-wise: My style is very much impulsive, and at times juvenile. I like my colours slightly outside the lines

  • Negative space. This goes without saying. It’s not always about what you see but all that’s needed are the parts you don’t see.

  • Bold Contrasting colours: BOLD BOLD BOLD that’s what I like. I try not to let my passion for yellow creep in too much to my prints but it usually does. Sorry, not sorry.

What do I want to do next?

I want to go back to basics and work on some acrylic abstract paint canvasses. These will be one-off originals. I might need a bit of practice as it’s been a while.
